Formula & worked example

Hours worked = (end − start) − break, adding 24 hours when the shift crosses midnight. Regular hours are capped at the overtime threshold; the rest are paid at the overtime multiplier.

A 09:00–17:30 shift with a 30-minute break is 8 hours worked. At $20/hour that is $160. A 09:00–19:00 shift with the same break is 9.5 hours: 8 regular + 1.5 overtime at 1.5× = $160 + $45 = $205.

Limitations — read this before you rely on it

This calculator covers one shift pattern repeated across the week; it is not a weekly roster or a pay-period timesheet, and it does not handle taxes, deductions, or paid leave.

Frequently asked questions

If the end time is earlier than the start time, 24 hours are added, so 22:00–06:00 counts as an 8-hour shift before breaks.

No — only unpaid breaks reduce hours worked. Paid breaks are already part of your paid time.

An overtime multiplier of 1.5: overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate.

No. This is a single-shift hours-worked calculator; a time card tracks a whole week's roster of different shifts.

No — the pay shown is gross pay before tax and deductions.
