How to use this tool

1
Count department patients and beds

Use the current census at one moment.

2
Count admitted patients waiting

These are boarders waiting for inpatient beds.

3
Add ventilators and waits

Ventilators add 13.4 points each and waits add per hour.

4
Read the crowding band

Bands run from not busy to dangerously overcrowded.

Formula & worked example

NEDOCS = -20 + 85.8 x (ED patients / beds) + 600 x (admitted waiting / beds) + 13.4 x ventilators + 0.93 x longest admitted wait + 5.64 x last bed wait.

40 patients, 30 beds, 8 admitted waiting, 1 ventilated, longest wait 4 hours and last wait 2 hours gives -20 + 114.4 + 160 + 13.4 + 3.72 + 11.28 = 282.8, dangerously overcrowded.
