Find the midpoint of a line segment, with its length, slope and equation — in 2D, or in 3D under Advanced options.
Enter both z values to switch to 3D: the midpoint becomes the average of x, y and z, and slope is not defined in 3D.
midpoint
How to use this tool
Type x₁, y₁ for the first point and x₂, y₂ for the second.
The big result is the point exactly halfway between them.
The segment length, its slope and the line equation are shown alongside.
Under Advanced options, add z₁ and z₂ for the 3D midpoint and distance.
Formula & worked example
For (2, 3) and (6, 7): midpoint = ((2 + 6) ÷ 2, (3 + 7) ÷ 2) = (4, 5); distance = √(16 + 16) = 5.657; slope = 1, so the line is y = x + 1.
Limitations — read this before you rely on it
Slope is undefined for a vertical line (x₁ = x₂), where the line equation is x = constant instead of y = mx + b. Results are rounded to 4 decimal places for display.
Frequently asked questions
The point exactly halfway along a line segment — the average of the two endpoints' coordinates.
Average the x values and average the y values: ((x₁ + x₂) ÷ 2, (y₁ + y₂) ÷ 2).
The midpoint still works, but the slope is undefined (division by zero in run) and the line equation is x = constant.
Yes — average x, y and z separately. Enter both z values under Advanced options.
