Find the final-exam score you need — from your current grade, its weight and the grade you want.
If your coursework so far is worth 60% of the final grade, the final exam is worth the other 40%.
Add each assignment or category with its score and its weight. Weights do not need to add up to 100 — they are normalised automatically.
Optional second target, shown alongside the main result in final-exam mode.
score needed on the final
How to use this tool
Enter your current grade and how much of the final grade it is worth — the rest is the final exam's weight.
Type the final grade you want, for example 90% for an A.
Read the exact score you need on the final — plus a plain verdict on whether it is within reach.
Switch to Weighted grades mode to combine several assignments into one overall grade, optionally dropping the lowest score.
Formula & worked example
Your coursework so far is 85% and worth 60% of your grade, and you want to finish at 90%: you need (90 − 85 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 97.5% on the final exam. In weighted mode, scores of 90% (weight 30), 80% (weight 30) and 100% (weight 40) give (90×30 + 80×30 + 100×40) ÷ 100 = 91%.

Grading scales and rounding rules differ by school and teacher — some use plus/minus grades, some round up, some weight categories differently. This calculator uses the standard A ≥ 90 / B ≥ 80 / C ≥ 70 / D ≥ 60 scale and exact percentages, so always confirm the scale and weighting with your course syllabus. It cannot account for extra credit unless you add it as an assignment.
Frequently asked questions
Required final score = (desired grade − current grade × current weight) ÷ final weight. With 85% so far worth 60% and a 90% target, that is (90 − 85 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 97.5%.
Yes — switch to Weighted grades mode, add each assignment with its score and weight, and the calculator works out your overall grade. Weights are normalised automatically, so they do not need to add up to 100.
If the required score is above 100%, the target is impossible on the final alone — the calculator says so plainly and shows the highest grade a perfect final can reach. Options include a lower target or asking about extra credit.
A grade calculator works out what you need on a final exam from your current grade, or your overall grade from weighted assignments. It is also called a final grade calculator, test grade calculator or grading calculator.
Yes. Under Advanced options, switch on “Drop the lowest weighted score” and the lowest-scoring assignment is excluded from the overall grade in weighted mode — a common policy in many courses.
