Solve a regular hexagon from any one measurement — side, area, perimeter, apothem or a diagonal — with every other measurement worked out.
A regular hexagon has six equal sides and six equal 120° angles. The apothem is the distance from the centre to the middle of a side; the long diagonal joins opposite corners and the short diagonal joins every second corner.
Area of the hexagon
—How to use this tool
Choose side, area, perimeter, apothem or a diagonal — the calculator solves the hexagon from any single one.
Type the known value. Lengths and areas must be greater than zero.
Side, area, perimeter, apothem and both diagonals appear together, so you never need a second calculation.
The long diagonal is always twice the side and the short diagonal is side × √3 — use those as a quick sanity check.
Formula & worked example
Side 2: area = (3√3 ÷ 2) × 4 ≈ 10.3923, perimeter = 12, apothem ≈ 1.7321, long diagonal = 4, short diagonal ≈ 3.4641. Given only the area 10.3923, the side works back out to exactly 2.
Limitations — read this before you rely on it
This is a regular hexagon only — all sides and angles equal. Irregular six-sided shapes need their own side lengths and cannot be solved from one measurement. Results are rounded to 4 decimal places.
Frequently asked questions
A six-sided polygon with all sides equal and all interior angles 120°, like a honeycomb cell.
The distance from the centre to the midpoint of a side: apothem = side × √3 ÷ 2.
The long diagonal joins opposite corners and equals twice the side; the short diagonal joins every second corner and equals side × √3.
Area = (3√3 ÷ 2) × side². For side 2 that is about 10.3923 square units.
Yes — side = perimeter ÷ 6, and everything else follows from the side.
