Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions — with simplified answers and mixed numbers.
Enter whole numbers only. Negative fractions are fine (put the minus sign on the numerator). A denominator can never be zero.
Simplified answer
How to use this tool
Enter the numerator and denominator of the first fraction.
Choose add, subtract, multiply or divide.
Enter the numerator and denominator of the second fraction.
Read the simplified answer, its mixed-number form and its decimal equivalent, with the working shown.
Formula & worked example
1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 ≈ 0.833333. And 3/2 as a mixed number is 1 1/2. Multiplying fractions is simpler: 1/2 × 2/3 = 2/6 = 1/3.
Limitations — read this before you rely on it
This calculator works with whole-number numerators and denominators only — it does not accept decimals or fractions inside fractions, and very large numbers may lose precision because browsers use floating-point arithmetic for the decimal equivalent. The fraction result itself is computed with exact integer arithmetic. A denominator of zero is undefined and is rejected, as is division by a zero fraction.
Frequently asked questions
Enter both fractions and pick add, subtract, multiply or divide. The answer is simplified to lowest terms, with the mixed number and decimal equivalent shown.
For addition and subtraction, first give both fractions a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify: 1/2 × 2/3 = 2/6 = 1/3. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply instead.
A mixed number combines a whole number with a fraction, like 1 1/2. It is the same value as the improper fraction 3/2 — divide the numerator by the denominator and keep the remainder over the denominator.
Simplifying means dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 2/6 simplifies to 1/3 because both divide by 2.
