How to use this tool

1
Measure the finished piece

Enter project length and width, including hems and seam allowances.

2
Enter the fabric width

Use the width printed on the bolt, in the same unit.

3
Add pattern and waste

In advanced options, add the pattern repeat and a waste percentage.

4
Read the total

Buy at least the total length shown, rounded up to the shop’s cutting increment.

Formula & worked example

Strips = ceil(project width / fabric width). Strip length = project length + pattern repeat. Total = strips × strip length × (1 + waste%).

A 150 × 120 cm project on 140 cm fabric with 10% waste needs 1 strip of 150 cm, i.e. 165 cm of fabric.

Limitations — read this before you rely on it

Assumes straight rectangular strips cut along the length; shaped, bias-cut or panelled garments need a pattern layout, not this estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Fabric is sold by length off a roll of fixed width, so a wide project needs several side-by-side strips.

The vertical distance after which a printed motif repeats; each strip needs an extra repeat so motifs align.

10% covers cutting and squaring for simple projects; allow more for matching, nap or directional prints.

No — add your hem and seam allowances to the project length and width first.

Yes, buy the next whole increment the shop sells; dye lots can differ between bolts.
