India: estimate ELSS mutual fund returns for SIP or lump sum, Section 80C tax saved, and the 3-year lock-in that applies to every instalment.
Estimated maturity value
How to use this tool
Monthly SIP spreads the investment; lump sum invests everything at once.
Your monthly or one-time amount, an assumed annual return, and how long you stay invested.
To estimate the Section 80C saving; leave it at 0 if you use the new tax regime, where the 80C deduction does not apply.
Remember every instalment is locked for 3 years — ELSS is not for money you may need sooner.
Formula & worked example
A ₹10,000 monthly SIP at an assumed 12% a year for 5 years invests ₹600,000 and grows to about ₹824,864 — gains of about ₹224,864. LTCG tax at 12.5% on gains above ₹1,25,000 is about ₹12,483, and Section 80C tax saved at a 30% slab on ₹1,50,000 is ₹45,000 a year of deduction value (subject to the overall 80C limit).
Limitations — read this before you rely on it
India-specific illustration only. Returns are assumed smooth and are not guaranteed — equity funds fluctuate and can lose money. The 3-year lock-in applies per instalment, not per SIP as a whole. Tax figures use the rates stated in the tool and the overall Section 80C limit; actual tax depends on your full return, the current Finance Act, and whether you use the old or new regime (ELSS deduction is an old-regime benefit). Not investment advice.
Frequently asked questions
Equity Linked Savings Scheme: an equity mutual fund that qualifies for tax deduction under Section 80C of the Indian Income Tax Act, with the shortest lock-in (3 years) among 80C options.
Each instalment is locked for 3 years from its own investment date. So a SIP started today frees its first instalment after 3 years, the second a month later, and so on — the whole SIP is not free at once.
Up to ₹1,50,000 a year can be claimed under Section 80C in total across all 80C investments. At a 30% slab that is worth up to ₹45,000 of tax a year, plus applicable surcharge and cess in a real filing.
No. ELSS invests mainly in equities, so returns vary with the market and can be negative over short periods. The 12% figure used here is an assumption for illustration, not a forecast.
Gains on units held over 12 months are long-term capital gains, taxed at 12.5% on gains above ₹1,25,000 a year across equity investments, under the rules reflected in this calculator. Rules change with each Budget — verify before redeeming.
