How to use this tool
Type the full bill amount, including tax, unless you want to use the pre-tax option below.
Tap 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%, or type any custom percentage you like.
Enter how many people are splitting the bill — leave it at 1 if you are paying alone.
Read the tip, the total and each person's share. Switch on round-up in Advanced options to make the total a whole number.
Formula & worked example
A $100 bill with a 20% tip, split between 4 people: the tip is $20.00, the total is $120.00, and each person pays $30.00 ($25.00 bill + $5.00 tip). With round-up on a $47.33 bill at 18%, the total rounds from $55.85 up to $56.00 and the tip becomes $8.67.
Limitations — read this before you rely on it
Tipping customs vary by country — in some places a service charge is already included, and tipping on top of it means tipping twice, so check the bill first. This calculator splits the bill equally; if people ordered very different amounts, split by what each person ordered instead. It does not handle tax rules or service charges beyond the optional pre-tax figure.
Frequently asked questions
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. A 20% tip on a $100 bill is $20, so the total is $120. Divide both by the number of people to split the bill fairly.
Tap a preset (10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%) or type any percentage in the custom box. 15–20% is standard for good restaurant service in the US; adjust up or down for the service you received.
Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the bill, the tip and the total equally. Each person pays the same share — the per-person figures are shown separately.
Switch on “Round total up to the next dollar” under Advanced options. The tip is adjusted so the total is a whole number, which is handy when paying cash.
Yes. Enter the tax amount under Advanced options and the calculator also shows the tip on the pre-tax amount, for people who prefer to tip before tax rather than on the tax-inclusive total.
