How to use this tool

1
Paste your numbers

Paste your numbers separated by commas or spaces.

2
Check the sorted list

Check the sorted list shown in the note.

3
Read the five numbers

Read minimum, Q1, median, Q3 and maximum.

4
Inspect any outliers

Inspect any values flagged beyond the 1.5 × IQR fences.

Formula & worked example

Sort the data. Q1, median and Q3 are the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles by linear interpolation: position = p × (n − 1). IQR = Q3 − Q1. Outlier fences: Q1 − 1.5 × IQR and Q3 + 1.5 × IQR.

For 1 to 11, the five-number summary is minimum 1, Q1 3.5, median 6, Q3 8.5, maximum 11, with IQR 5 and no outliers.

Limitations — read this before you rely on it

Quartile conventions differ between textbooks and software, so small-sample quartiles may differ slightly from another tool; flagged outliers are a screening rule, not proof of error.

Frequently asked questions

Minimum, first quartile (Q1), median, third quartile (Q3) and maximum. A box plot draws a box from Q1 to Q3 with a line at the median and whiskers to the extremes.

Linear interpolation on sorted data (type 7, as in Excel PERCENTILE.INC). Other methods, such as Tukey hinges, can give slightly different quartiles for small samples.

Any value below Q1 − 1.5 × IQR or above Q3 + 1.5 × IQR. Flagged points are not automatically wrong — they may be genuine extremes worth investigating.

It shows skew and outliers at a glance and works for non-normal data, where mean and standard deviation can mislead.

At least 4. Quartiles from very small samples are unstable, so treat them as rough guides.
