Formula & worked example

Fit check: bed width + 2 x walkway clearance <= room width, and bed length + walkway clearance <= room length. Preference order favours the largest comfortable bed, with 80–84 inch lengths for tall sleepers.

Two sleepers in a 12 x 12 ft room with 30 inch walkways are recommended a King (76 x 80 in); a single sleeper 76 inches tall is recommended a Twin XL (38 x 80 in).

Guide only using US standard sizes: it ignores door swings, wardrobes, radiators, ceiling slope and personal comfort preference.

Frequently asked questions

Twin 38×75, Twin XL 38×80, Full 54×75, Queen 60×80, King 76×80 and California King 72×84 inches.

When sleepers are over about 6 ft 2 in and the room fits its 84 inch length; otherwise a King gives more width.

About 30 inches each side is comfortable; 24 inches is a workable minimum in a small room.

Only if the room fits it with walkways left over; a cramped King is worse than a comfortable Queen.

Yes, UK sizes differ (for example a UK King is 60×78 in), so this tool uses US dimensions only.
