How to use this tool
Dosing bands differ sharply between young children, children, adolescents and adults.
XR is not labelled under age 6, and narcolepsy dosing is IR only.
Add every dose taken in the day together, including any booster dose.
The tool flags a total above the labelled maximum for prescriber discussion.
Formula & worked example
An adult on Adderall IR for ADHD at 20 mg/day is within the labelled maximum of 40 mg/day (starting dose 5 mg, titrated weekly). A child aged 6–12 on Adderall XR has a labelled maximum of 30 mg/day.
Limitations — read this before you rely on it
Label summaries only; they cannot reflect cardiac history, other medicines, tolerance, misuse risk, renal impairment or individual response. Adderall is a Schedule II controlled substance. This tool is not medical advice — never start, stop or change a stimulant dose without the prescriber.
Frequently asked questions
No — unlike many paediatric drugs, Adderall dosing is by age, form and response, titrated in small weekly steps.
IR acts for about 4–6 hours and is usually taken 2–3 times daily; XR is once-daily with a biphasic release lasting about 10–12 hours.
No — the XR label does not recommend use under 6 because of higher exposure and adverse effects at the same dose.
General label advice is to take it when remembered unless it is late in the day (which can disturb sleep); never double up — ask the prescriber or pharmacist.
To flag totals above the labelled range for discussion. Some patients are prescribed outside the usual range for documented reasons — that is a prescriber decision, not something to copy.
