How to use this tool

1
Find the event counts

Take apneas and hypopneas from the sleep study report.

2
Find total sleep time

Use hours actually asleep, not hours in bed.

3
Enter both counts and hours

The AHI updates live.

4
Read the band

Compare with the normal / mild / moderate / severe bands.

Formula & worked example

AHI = (apneas + hypopneas) / total sleep time in hours. Bands: <5 normal, 5–14.9 mild, 15–29.9 moderate, ≥30 severe.

10 apneas + 15 hypopneas over 7 hours gives 25 / 7 = 3.6 events per hour, in the normal band; 100 events over 6 hours gives 16.7, moderate.

Limitations — read this before you rely on it

Educational aid only, using published AHI bands. It is not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and cannot replace a sleep study interpreted by a sleep clinician. Anyone with symptoms of sleep apnea should seek professional assessment.

Frequently asked questions

The average number of apneas (full pauses) plus hypopneas (partial reductions) per hour of sleep, from a sleep study.

Under 5 normal, 5–14.9 mild, 15–29.9 moderate, 30 or more severe sleep apnea.

No — counting events reliably needs proper sleep monitoring. Snoring apps and wearables are not a substitute.

Not entirely: symptoms, oxygen levels and sleep quality also matter, and a clinician interprets the full study.

A sleep clinician may discuss weight, sleep position, CPAP or other treatments depending on severity and symptoms.
