Zero Waste Christmas Tree Calculator

Compare a real, potted and artificial Christmas tree on footprint and waste — ESTIMATES using stated per-tree factors, since disposal route and reuse years change the answer most.

How to use this tool

1
Pick the tree type

Real cut, potted living or artificial — each has a different footprint and waste story.

2
Enter reuse years for artificial

This is the decisive number: an artificial tree only wins if it is reused for many years.

3
Enter travel distance

A long car trip to buy any tree adds a noticeable share of its footprint.

4
Read the per-year figure

Comparing per year of use, not one Christmas, is the fair way to judge artificial against real.

Formula & worked example

Footprint = base production / growing footprint + distance x 0.2 kg CO2e per km (car travel estimate). Bases (estimates): real cut 3.5 kg if chipped or composted, potted 2 kg, artificial 40 kg spread over reuse years.

An artificial tree with a 40 kg footprint, bought 20 km away, totals 44 kg CO2e — 4.4 kg per year if reused for 10 years.

Limitations — read this before you rely on it

The disposal route dominates the real-tree figure: a real tree sent to landfill produces far more methane than one chipped or composted, and an artificial tree kept only two or three years is usually worse than a real one.

Frequently asked questions

It depends: a real tree chipped after use, or a potted tree replanted, usually beats an artificial tree used only a few years. An artificial tree reused 10+ years can win.

A real tree in landfill decomposes without oxygen and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Chipping or composting avoids most of that.

A tree with no landfill waste: potted and replanted, or cut and fully chipped, composted or mulched — plus reusable decorations.

Larger trees use more resources and transport, but the effect is smaller than type, disposal and reuse years, so height is context here.

Not included. Reusable decorations and LED lights kept for years add little per Christmas compared with the tree itself.
