Calculate feed conversion ratio (FCR) from feed eaten and weight gained, plus feed efficiency, for livestock, poultry or aquaculture.
Result
How to use this tool
Enter total feed eaten over the period, in kg.
Weigh the animal or group at the start and end.
Lower is better: less feed per kg of gain.
Compare within species, age and system only.
Formula & worked example
200 kg of feed producing 100 kg of gain gives an FCR of 2.0 and 50% feed efficiency.
Limitations — read this before you rely on it
Assumes all recorded feed was eaten (not wasted) and weights are on the same basis. Feed waste inflates FCR.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on species: broilers about 1.5–1.8, pigs 2.5–3.0, cattle higher. Lower is better.
They are reciprocals: efficiency = 1 ÷ FCR × 100%.
No, as long as feed and gain use the same unit.
Age, health, heat stress, poor feed quality and waste all raise FCR.
Rarely in practice, since animals also burn feed for maintenance, not only growth.
